Paying employees on long-term sick leave

During the first 3 days the employer is bound to pay the normal gross wage of the employee. In the next 12 days the employer is bound to pay the difference between the sickness benefit and the gross wage per day. In the subsequent 36 days the employer is bound to pay the difference between the sickness benefit and 1/2 the gross wage per day.

The sickness benefit is €10.81 per day for a single person, or a married person with spouse working or a separated person not maintaining a spouse. In the other cases, the sickness benefit is  €16.72 per day.

The employee, or any relative must every week go to his local labour office and hand in a copy of the medical certificate. The sickness benefit will be received by post.
