Malta - USA Double Tax Treaty ratified in US

Written by Franco Falzon — Tue, 20 July 2010

The US Senate has approved the Malta – USA double tax treaty signed on the 8th of August 2008. Malta’s Minister of Finance has described this step as a “critical step in deepening Malta’s relationship with the USA, not only at the political and social levels, but also in trade and investment.”

The Malta – US treaty is expected to continue expanding and facilitating cross-border trade and investment between these two states. In connection with the interpretation of this treaty, the US has already published a 92 page document containing technical explanations on each article to this convention. These technical explanations are also deemed to be the official guide to the treaty. Amongst others, the technical guidelines clarify the parameters as to who may be entitled and what benefits may be claimed under this convention.

Ratification of the convention by Maltese Parliament is expected soon.
